Did ‘Shooting Star’ Go Too Far?

Last week’s episode of Glee, 4×18 ‘Shooting Star’ was by far the most controversial episode and Glee has had some pretty newsworthy episodes *cough* The First Time *cough*. It got a lot of backlash. There were some positive comments, though. Oddly enough, the ratings went up in that episode. Anyways, I figured that I’d get my two cents in because what’s the point of a Glee blog if I don’t discuss Glee?

I’ve never been personally affected by guns or school shootings and as awful as it is to say, every time my school has a practice lockdown, kids in my class treat it like a joke. So the episode didn’t bother me on a personal level. It was more emotional because I’m kinda in love with like every character on the show and seeing them so scared and sad tore me apart. I went in thinking it’d be one of those episodes where everyone cries but me, but that was wrong. The episode was not fun.

I was watching the news Friday night and there was a short segment on the response to the episode. Apparently, the parents from Sandy Hook (the school that from the December school shooting) weren’t pleased with the episode and wanted some warnings. As much as I totally feel for them and can’t even image what they went through, I’m gonna argue Glee’s side here, for the sake of this blog. Firstly, it’s not like it was a huge secret. I knew that there would be a shooting. I knew weeks before and I told y’all about it too. Granted, I go out looking for the spoilers and I know that’s not a hobby of everyone’s. But the point is, it was known. I do think that Glee could have made it a bit more known, though. The promo didn’t highlight it much and I assume that it was simply to enhance the element of surprise.
Secondly, there was the disclaimer at the beginning of the episode. That was a first for Glee, like I mentioned a few days ago. It wasn’t even a general one. The disclaimer said that the topic of violence in school was going to covered and viewer discretion is advised. So if you’re not comfortable with that topic, don’t watch, simple as that.
Thirdly, Glee wasn’t making fun of it. They didn’t treat it like a joke. Glee was simply doing what it is known for: taking worldly events and trying to raise awareness and make them somewhat relatable. It’s what Glee does and to single it out for this episode only is not okay.

But not all feedback was negative. Let’s face it: Glee had continuity, good songs, fabulous acting and a meaningful message. It wasn’t a bad episode. Although I don’t have an account, I frequent tags on Tumblr and I like to read what people thought of the episode. There were many people who said they liked the episode and it was maybe the season’s best. Whether I agree with that or not, I agree that it wasn’t the worst. It’s also interesting because there were no New York scenes in this episode and a lot of people like those more.

The next thing I want to bring up is Becky. If you saw the episode or read anything about it (hopefully my recap) you’d know that it was Becky Jackson who brought the gun to school and accidentally fired it, despite the fact that Sue took the blame. I didn’t really consider this until much later when people were commenting on it, but some were upset that it was Becky, the only character with a mental disability (downs syndrome), who had the gun. Some were upset that Glee blamed sweet little Becky for something as serious as a gun. Had it been anyone else, the backlash would have been somewhat less, so it seems. But you know what? I didn’t even think twice about this at first. Glee has said many times that Becky just wants to be normal and that Sue should treat her like she would a normal person. But now that she has a gun, it’s how-dare-Glee-do-that-because-she-is-not-normal. A bit of a double standard some people have, eh? Like I said, I don’t think it’s a big deal. Not only for the fact of normality, but she wasn’t going to use the gun for killing. She wanted protection. She was scared of the future and wanted a bit of comfort. The firing was an accident. If she was going to use the gun for killing, then yes, maybe it’d be a bigger deal and we’d have to question the mindset. But it wasn’t. Did anyone raise a complaint last year when Puck had the fake knife? No. End of story. Another point was brought up saying that the gun was Becky’s dad’s and they let their disabled daughter have some access to it. Again with the disabled thing, but guess what guys? Glee is set in America and in America, guns are legal in most places, including Ohio (I Googled it) so it’s not that farfetched that there are guns around. I’m Canadian so I don’t know much about guns at all. My point is, I didn’t have a problem with Becky being the one with the gun. No one guessed it, and we gotta give props to Glee for that, and it highlighted Sue’s heart when she took the blame.

Basically my point is that I don’t think Glee went too far in doing an episode about guns in school because I think it’s a good thing to bring up in light of last December’s horrific events. Are you telling me that all those crime and murder detective shows out there are forbidden to do an episode about guns at school from now on? No. Just because it’s Glee, it’s gotta take all the fault, it seems. And I also didn’t have a problem with Becky being the one who had the weapon. But like I said, that’s just me. I know we all have different opinions and by all means, tell me yours. Leave a comment. Argue with me. I like it. But I understand that not all of you want to (I don’t understand why but….) so to quickly get your opinions, I made these little polls that I want y’all to do.

Again, I really want to hear what you think so leave a comment and tell me! ❤ And make sure to come back tomorrow when I post this week’s Glee songs! Byeeeee

Firstly, I didn’t/couldn’t vote on the third poll because I haven’t yet seen the episode for myself. I’ll vote when I see it. 🙂 I promise.

To be honest, I’m kinda putting off seeing it for a few more days, though. I’m just starting to get through my latest case of writer’s block, and since my story is set in Season 2, watching Season 4 eps is a lower priority now that I can finally write again. *knocks on wood*

I did think a lot about Becky being the one with the gun, and it was pretty easy top notice for me, as I have a couple learning disabilities/differences myself. As mean as she might be at times, I feel connected to Becky for that reason, much like I feel connected to Emma by our OCD. I don’t think I was ever offended by Glee’s choice to put a gun in Becky’s hands, but it did confuse me. I get that she wants to be normal, but is there a specific reason why they chose her over any other student? In the end, I guess it was all for the purpose of adding to Sue’s character. After all, who else would she deliberately get in serious trouble for?

But hey, as one of my best friends often says, “It’s just a show.” (I thoroughly disagree with that, by the way… It’s only *just a show* when it’s not the only show you watch anymore. Lol…)

On the subject of violence, I think I would need to see the episode as this isn’t as concrete a controversy as it might sound to some. But I will say this: I saw a couple of GIFs of Sam being restrained by Will and Shannon, and it was EX-CRU-CI-A-TING to see even once, let alone on loop! …another reason to put off seeing the episode, since, as you know, he’s my #1 reason for watching Glee…

Thank you for posting this and getting your readers involved and active. 😀 I’m sorry I haven’t commented in a while, but I swear, I read every post you make, even if I don’t reply to them all. 😀 I hope this long comment makes up for the times when I don’t say anything.

*sings the YOU ARE AWESOME song!*

Can I just say that your new icon is so adorable? 😉 And I totally understand what you mean about writers block. I hate it, so good luck to you!
I still don’t think it was abig deal to have Becky with the gun. I think people would made a big deal no matter who it was. I mean, let’s say it was Jake who had the gun; people would freak out because he’s half black. Or if it was Blaine they’d say it was because he cheated on Kurt and Sam doesn’t love him so he in a depression and it dangerous. Becky was the one simply to give Sue a reason to be nice.
And I agree there, Glee is not ‘just a show’, it’s my life. XD
OMG that scene with Sam, Will and Beiste was awful. It was so good, but yes, it was excrucaiting to see. All you saw was the gif, wait until you see the episode!
Thanks for your input and I look forward to hearing what you have to say after you’ve seen the episode. 🙂

Thank you! I ~love~ cats, so I wanted an icon that just screams it to the world. 😀

*shudders* I just saw the GIF again a few minutes ago… *cries* Must… keep writing… That should be able to get my mind off that image till the time comes to actually see it along with the rest of the ep.

But yeah, people in the Sam Appreciation Thread on the Glee Forum are totally freaking out over it. Not the GIF. The episode. Lol… But that’s where I found the GIF. I don’t really do anything with Tumblr anymore. I dunno why. I just haven’t been there in a while. But I’m sure I’d find more on there easily if I dared to try.

I heard from another friend of mine who also likes Glee that it won’t be doing a fifth season. I honestly don’t see what the point of a fifth season would have been, since most of the original ND members would have left Lima by then. I have to say I saw it coming. But I’m not a foolproof news source, so don’t sue me if there is a Season 5 on its way! *kidding about the suit* Hee…

        Type at ya soon!

Season 5 has not been confirmed yet. TV Line, I think, said that it most likely will be, but it’s up to Fox to say. Apparently they make their official statement in the middle of May, like the 13th or something.

Oh. My. Gosh. I just went to watch the new episode on my DVR, and by the way, like I said, Glee is the only reason I have a need for TV service at all… The DVR says the ep recorded, but it won’t play! I am so ticked off right now… 😥

I finally get the courage up to watch it and I can’t!! I don’t even have Hulu+ anymore, because I didn’t think I’d need it! Ugh!

I watched a nice, long clip of the episode on YouTube and feel like I can handler the intensity now that I know what to expect. AAHHH! 😡 So frustrating. *sobs*

I found it on Video On Demand. 🙂 Thanks for the suggestions, by the way. I’ll go vote on that last poll now, as promised. And for the record, I loved it. Such excellent acting. The songs were great, too. 🙂

You said “4×14 Shooting Star” in the bottom poll question. Just thought I’d mention it.

Okay. So… glee was awesome and has rights to do controvercial things. Like this. Also I think Becky having the gun was fine. She didn’t kill anyone like you said. I think its dumb that society has changed us into… ” if you are mental and have a gun you will kill people.” I mean that’s dumb and with that I need to finish otherwise I’m going to rant 😡

I watched those 12 minutes with my hand slapped over my mouth. I was terrified and I knew it was coming. The ONLY thing that bothered me in this episode was that every single person had somebody they were texting or tweeting or saying goodbye to but not once did Blaine text Kurt. The love of his life? That seemed so weird to me. He doesn’t even mention his dad until the cutaway where you here him say “Dad?” I really hope that is explained tomorrow night because it is still bugging me. Just saying.

Lol same, my hands were on my face too and I was shaking.
Yeah I wanted him to mention Kurt too. I mean, he mentioned Tina, but not Kurt. But for all we know, maybe he did and we didn’t see it? :S

I really hope that is the case and I hope that they at least show Kurt reacting to what happened. I mean, broken up or not, nobody wants to think about somebody they love being in danger, even if they know it turned out to be nothing. I just really want more Klaine. 😦 I want Blaine in New York like now.

There was a thing on youtube with the whole shooting scene and I had just had a really bad day so watched that and then new that wasn’t my imagination and glee still actually did that :O Then I felf grateful for everything and that I’m not dead even though glee’s was a complete simulation. Our school doesn’t do these drills which is depressing but that’s our school -_-

Yeah if anything, that last episode taught us to be glad of what we have and to say what we need to say. 🙂
Maybe you should inquire that your school practices lockdowns. It never hurts to be prepared.
